Guide to Disability Discrimination for Public Safety Management (2021 Edition)
State and local authorities must be sure to comply with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) with respect to their employees. There are many misconceptions and misunderstandings regarding the rights afforded to employees, and the obligations of employers, under the ADA, and this Guide will seek to clarify many of those ambiguities. This Guide provides an overview of the ADA with a particular focus on public safety personnel and includes discussions on the meaning of “qualified individual with a disability”, reasonable accommodations, actions specifically prohibited under the ADA, medical examinations, fitness for duty evaluations, Chapter 151B of the Massachusetts General Laws, case examples, and many other topics.
